Running is one of the most (if not THE most) participated sports out there, Everyday millions of people around the globe make the choice to put on a pair of shoes head out the front door and go for a run.
Come rain or shine, in hot weather or cold at every single minute of every single day somewhere in the world someone will be running.
But why do we do it?
There are the obvious reasons – To lose weight, to stay fit, to meet new people or to help relieve stress but there are easier things that could be done.
Instead of getting up at some ridiculous time in the morning and leaving your nice warm bed behind to put on clothes, that in other situations you would’nt be seen dead in, heading out the front door and pounding the streets.
The great thing about being a runner is it is the least exclusive club in the world, it doesn’t matter if it is your first time running or if you have been doing it for years, if you have just run your first mile or have run a marathon.
The fact is very simple, if you run then you’re a runner and everyone is equal.
It doesn’t matter if you run a mile in 6 minutes or 16 minutes, a mile is still a mile and you just ran that! Well done you,
Yes you, powered by nothing but your own body and determination, you!
And that feels good doesn’t it?
It doesn’t matter what your budget is, you can spend $50 or $500 on a pair of running shoes.
It doesn’t matter if you are male or female, fat or thin, tall or short, young or old and your ethnicity is not important.
The only thing that matters is that you choose to run, your mindset and your own determination are your only obstacles and you are the only person you need to convince.
No one else can ever question you or try and deny you are a runner, because they can’t, as already said if you run you’re a runner so it is down to you and only you to choose.
I can’t claim that it is for everyone but as a runner I would recommend that everyone tries it and then makes up his or her own mind.
It honestly doesn’t matter if you look like Phoebe from friends or Mo Farah if you want a hobby, want to lose weight, get fit, help control long term illness like diabetes, relax and clear your head or you just want to run.
Give it a go, the heath benefits are too numerous to list here, and not just physical but mental as well.
“Exercise is proven to release endorphins in the body and I don’t know anyone that has ever got home after a run and regretted it”
Just remember that the first steps out the door and the last ones back in are the hardest part of any run and just enjoy everything else in between.
Set realistic personal goals and you will never be disappointed.
Start off small and see where the road takes you, you never know, that first mile tomorrow could turn into a marathon next year, or another mile the day after and then a mile a day every day.
The goals and achievements are yours and no-one can take them away from you.
And with that I will leave you with just one question …
… Are you a runner?
